Top 10 Trends in Social Work Today.

I have been working with the social work & social housing sector for the last 17 years or so and it’s a field that’s constantly evolving and changing. Staying on top of these trends is critical to being at the forefront of the industry.

With this in mind, we’ve rounded up the top 10 trends in social work today and we thought we would share them with you.

  1. Increased Focus on #Intervention and #Prevention – More and more people are seeking treatment for substance abuse and mental health. This means we’ll need more social workers to meet their needs, and the focus will shift to intervention and prevention.
  2. Trauma-Informed Therapy– There is a lot of trauma in today’s world, and the social work industry can change to reflect that. This means a greater focus on working with people who experienced trauma like veterans, refugee’s or abused children.
  3. Adoption of Outside Organisation Practices– Social workers will start to look at outside industries to find how they meet their clients’ needs to improve the overall client experience. Customer service-centred organisations will take the lead here.Be Recruitment | 109
  4. Reduced Paperwork Filing Time – A lot of social work is paperwork, and this takes up valuable time that social workers could use to help people. Digital systems speed up this process, and we’ll see more of them.
  5. Delivering Family-Centred Care – There will be a greater importance placed on family-centred care. This will help change family dynamics for the better, and this creates more effective and long-term solutions.
  6. Defining the Social Work Scope – The exact social work scope is blurry, and this can make creating effective solutions difficult. Social work is changing, and it is starting to get clearly-defined boundaries to work with.
  7. Promoting Self-Advocacy – Social workers will start giving their clients the tools they need to be a #self-advocate. They’re starting to shift the responsibilities to their clients, rather than handle it all themselves.
  8. Provide Support for People with Disabilities – Social workers play a key role in giving people with #disabilities the support and tools they need to have more control over their lives and reach their goals. Since 2016, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has been doing just that. It connects social workers with people with disabilities and their family or caregivers. Be Recruitment | 209
  9. Integrating Data Analytics – Data changed the social work industry for the better, and the next step is integrating data analytics. This will help social workers predict how effective their approach will be with their clients.
  10. Greater Cooperation Between Sectors – Not-for-profit organisations and government agencies have more pressure to share knowledge and resources. This can help streamline the patient experience and deliver more tailored care. These top 10 trends in the social work industry are working to make the social work industry more efficient, and they’ll continue to evolve and change the social work industry going forward.Be Recruitment | 309

We’d love to hear about some of the changes you have seen and experienced across the sector and how you see it evolving.

Will we all be replaced by robots eventually?!
